A Weekend on the Farm
Want the charm of farm life without the early mornings and daily chores? Spend a weekend exploring some of the region's working farms. These family-owned operations welcome visitors for an up-close look at the animals, crops and products that make farming so unique.
How do we know this itinerary works? We hit the road and experienced it ourselves. From feeding alpacas and strolling lavender-scented fields to meeting baby goats, this two-day adventure offers a deeper appreciation for the people who keep Oklahoma agriculture thriving.
Day 1: Alpacas and Lavender
Start your farm-filled weekend at Magnolia Blossom Ranch in Newcastle, where a herd of friendly alpacas is ready to greet you. This working ranch raises alpacas primarily for their fleece and offers educational tours by appointment.
During your visit, you will learn how the herd is cared for, how the fleece is harvested and the many ways the fiber is used. A video presentation explains the shearing process and highlights the unique qualities of alpaca fiber. The owners are passionate about their animals and eager to share their knowledge, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.
Before leaving, stop by the ranch store to browse alpaca-themed gifts and products made from the ranch's own fleece. And don't forget to snap a selfie with one of the fluffy residents. Keep an eye out for the ranch's "short-necked alpacas"-the resident barn cats who help keep things running smoothly.
After your morning with the alpacas, head to San Marcos Mexican Restaurant to refuel. This locally owned eatery serves authentic Mexican cuisine with a diverse menu featuring lunch specials, classic Mexican dinners and even brunch. It is the perfect stop before continuing your farm adventure.
Next, make your way to Lakeview Lavender Farm, a family-owned farm in Pauls Valley that delights visitors before they even step out of the car. The calming scent of lavender fills the air, creating an instant sense of relaxation.
Open by appointment during the week or select days during growing season, the farm invites guests to stroll through the fields, learn about the various plants and even pick their own bundle. Whether you are interested in photography opportunities, gardening or simply looking for a peaceful outdoor experience, the farm provides a beautiful setting.
The property overlooks a scenic pond complete with picnic tables, making it a wonderful spot to slow down and enjoy your surroundings. Inside the farm store, sample lavender lemonade and lavender cookies made using plants grown right on the farm. You will also find lotions, oils, culinary products and other lavender goods.
The owners are incredibly welcoming and happy to share their expertise, making your visit both personal and memorable.
Day 2: Barnyard Friends and Local Treats
Wrap up your farm tour at Merry Meadows Farm, an 18-acre working farm in Kingston that feels like stepping into the pages of a storybook.
Upon arriving, visitors are greeted by a retired rodeo horse, miniature donkeys, curious goats and a variety of other barnyard animals. The farm produces fresh eggs, goat milk and honey, which are available for purchase alongside a variety of locally made goods.
Inside the farm store, you can find handcrafted soaps, crocheted items, food products, home decor and other treasures created by both the farm and local vendors. Outside, with the animals roaming the property, you have plenty of opportunities for animal encounters.
During baby season, you may be lucky and get to meet newborn goats, chicks and ducklings. The farm also hosts special events throughout the year, including a farm breakfast, showcasing country hospitality.
Merry Meadows offers a wonderful opportunity to learn where everyday products come from and connect with animals.
After a morning spent on the farm, cool off with a treat at El Paraiso Ice Cream, Snacks & More in Madill. The menu is packed with unique desserts, snacks and drinks that encourage visitors to try something new. (We recommend the Dubai chocolate strawberries-yum!)
Just next door is Jireh Bakery & Cafe. The inviting bakery features beautiful wooden display cases filled with freshly baked pastries and in-house-baked breads.
Grab a tray, pick out your favorites and stock up on treats for the drive home. It is the perfect end to a weekend spent exploring the farms, flavors and friends of Chickasaw Country.
*Please remember some farms may operate seasonally or by appointment only, so be sure to check the hours of operation before visiting.
