Chickasaw Visitor Center introduces Chickasaw Artist Lance Straughn
Chickasaw Country, Okla.— Chickasaw artist Lance Straughn is now showing his original, award-winning artwork at the Chickasaw Visitor Center in Sulphur, Okla., through February 29, 2024.
Inspired by Chickasaw history and culture, Straughn gives his unique perspective of First American traditions.
“I am fascinated by Native American history and culture, and because of my heritage, I especially like telling the history of the Chickasaw people,” said Straughn. “As the Chickasaws interfaced with Europeans early on, much of their history and culture was lost. I want to preserve as much of what is left as I can through my art.”
Straughn specializes in oil, bronze and wood and describes his creative style as realistic impressionism. He utilizes bright colors to tell the story of Chickasaw culture through his art. He said he was first inspired to be an artist as a child while attending stomp dances with his Chickasaw grandmother. Since then, he has garnered national accolades for both his paintings and sculptures. His artistic footprint extends to both private and public collections, including at the Department of Interior Museum in Washington, D.C.
“Lance’s Chickasaw roots are showcased through his beautiful artwork, and we are pleased to display these pieces at our Visitor Center,” said Paige Williams Shepherd, Chickasaw Nation Director of Tourism. “We encourage visitors to experience our rich history and culture through these First American art displays, giving them a truly authentic view into Chickasaw Country.”
View Straughn’s exhibit at the Chickasaw Visitor Center now through February 29, 2024. For more information, visit www.chickasawcountry.com.
