Chickasaw National Recreation Area Eagle Watch
The annual return of the bald eagles to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma, is always a cause for celebration during the winter season! Join us for special Eagle Watch activities to highlight this extraordinary bird. This event is a collaboration between the Chickasaw Cultural Center and the National Park Service.
During migration season, approximately 2,000 eagles make their winter homes near lakes and rivers in various locations across Oklahoma. Lake of the Arbuckles is a popular roosting destination for some of these magnificent birds of prey.
The Eagle Watch starts with a ranger presentation at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area Travertine Nature Center at 9 a.m. followed by an observation of eagles at the Buckhorn Pavilion at Lake of the Arbuckles. Spotting scopes will be set up at designated eagle “hot spot” locations. Don't forget to bring your camera, binoculars, comfortable shoes and make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Visitors will use their own vehicles to follow park staff to Lake of the Arbuckles.
Following the eagle spotting, visit the Chickasaw Cultural Center for various free eagle-themed activities available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as daily activities including cultural demonstrations. Enjoy eagle cookies at the Aaimpa' Cafe and 20% off eagle themed items at the Aachompa' Gift Shop!
